I do not collect many Jazz posters, but have always admired the greats of Jazz from the 40’s through the early 60’s and Charles Mingus, make no mistake about him, was one of the all-time great Jazz Artists. Perhaps a reason I don’t have many Jazz posters is there are not that many that were kept from their performances. While rock groups had many fans, Jazz artists were for the most part limited to small clubs and a much less popular fan base so not a lot of jazz posters survived.
It is hard to rank the best Jazz artists and personally not knowing that much about how to judge the quality of their talent and contributions it is hard to say where Charles Mingus ranks, but in my mind he is in the top five with Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. While Mingus was most known as bassist, he also played the piano and strangely enough a trombone, but his bass playing is what ranks him among the best of jazz artists/musicians.
Seems many Jazz artists did not live that long; most of their lives were in bars exposed to alcohol and drugs, but Mingus outlasted many dying from ALS in 1979 at the age of 56. Shortly before his death he was working with Joni Mitchell (one of my favorite and most admired songwriters and artists of all time) on her album titled “Mingus”, obviously someone who was a major influence in Joni’s musical career.
As many of you may already know, I heavily favor posters with cosmetics that set the mode or excitement of the event and this one is excellent with a rare picture of Mingus holding his bass and playing. The mood of basically one color printing of black, shares of gray to white is perfect and a welcomed addition and expansion into the jazz realm of concert posters! |
